Chapter 20

“Do what?” Brent asked, as he came back into the kitchen.

Jane looked at Brent and gave him a big grin. “I’m going on a vacation for my birthday this year.”

Brent raised his eyebrows at this information. Since coming to live in Castle Peaks, Jane had never left the town by herself, except to go to Washington.

Giving her a smile of encouragement, he asked, “You are? Where are you going, and why do I get the feeling that I’m not invited?”

Jane laughed. “I didn’t say you couldn’t join me. In fact, I think you should plan on it.” She and Tara stood up from the table at the same time. “Let’s not stay in here. Let’s go in the living room. It’s more comfortable in there.

Brent spoke as the two ladies went through the door before him, and down the short hallway to the living room. When Jane sat on the couch, Tara sat next to her.

“Okay, where exactly are we going?” He dropped into a chair by the large unlit fireplace.

“I don’t know yet. Someplace warm with lots of sunshine, beaches, surfers, and no snow. Absolutely no snow. I guess I’ve had my fill of it for a while, Brent. Why don’t you light a fire in that fireplace? There’s a bit of a chill in here.”

“Based upon the amount of snow that’s coming down right now, I would be fully on board with someplace warm,” Brent replied, as he moved to start a fire. “If it keeps coming down like this, we’ll have at least another foot by morning.”

“Another foot of snow?” asked Tara.

“If not more. We normally get several feet of snow between Thanksgiving and Christmas around here, and they’ve been predicting more. There was supposed to be more last night, but the worst seemed to blow over.”

He stopped talking while he blew into the flames at the bottom of the fireplace, to light them up under the twigs and logs he’d placed in it.

“Trust me when I say, by New Year’s, we’ll all be tired of shoveling the stuff and ready for spring.” Brent looked over his shoulder, grinning at her.

Tara smiled back, looking over at him at the fireplace.

There was a wooden mantel covered with a piece of granite, and it was adorned with pictures and small trophies. The writing was too small for her to see, but it looked like a little boy with a hockey stick from where she was.

The sides were decorated with engraved leaves and vines, tree branches, and other outdoor-type stuff.

Standing majestically in the corner, on the other side of the room, was the most beautiful Christmas tree Tara had ever seen. Decorating the tree was one of her favorite activities.

Most years she couldn’t even wait until after Thanksgiving. She started putting up her tree and other decorations around mid-November. Her sister gave her a hard time when they still lived together, but Grace still seemed more than willing to join in, and get started celebrating the season.

The tree had been decorated with ornaments which appeared to have all been handmade.
